Kettle and Cup

Odd Coffee Facts

Medical scientists know that it is important to continue to exercise your brain regularly by learning new things in order to maintain your brain cells. Since I want you to be reading Kettle & Cup well into your old age (and mine) here is my donation to your increased brain cell activity. No need to thank me. :)

Coffee has fascinated humankind for centuries, and apparently monkeys too.
The Formosan Rock Monkey is a coffee addicted little creature. These little monkeys eat ripe coffee berries and spit out the beans. Farmers then gather the beans to roast and make into a unique and delicious brew, which sells for over 50 USD a pound and is said to taste like vanilla.

Apparently a farmer noticed one of the monkeys spitting out the beans and he decided to try to collect them and process them and see what happened.

Johann Sebastian Bach created a sonata completely about coffee. It is a satirical comedy which tells the story of coffee addiction that was considered a social problem in the 1700s.

King Louis XV spent the equivalent of $15,000 on coffee for his daughter. Maybe he was trying to get her up before 2 in the afternoon?

Ultimately we in the United States have the Boston Tea Party to thank for the popularity of coffee in our nation. Prior to that most people drank tea.

While Americans are discovering the delight of Asian teas Japan is discovering a passion for the proverbial cup of joe. Japan is the third highest coffee consuming nation in the world today.

Now…carpe diem because tempis fugit.  Capiche?

I love Bach, and I must say, I never knew about that Sonata. But I suppose he wrote quite a bit. All of this has been very interesting.
