Hosting A Red Hat Christmas Tea: Part 1 Decorating

I had the absolute fun of creating a Red Hat tea in my tearoom a few years ago.  These ladies are always such a fun bunch!

Anyway, since Red Hatters span the globe but really good tea rooms are not always available I thought I would share some ideas on hosting a special Red Hat Christmas Tea.

Keep the decorations in the spirit of things with a red/purple theme. A clear crystal bowl in the center of the table with red and purple Christmas balls in it and a large red pillar candle (or arrange other candles)  in the  midst of it will look great.

Use a hat shaped cookie cutter to cut hats from sugar cookie dough. Ice them red with purple bands and write a guest’s name on each one with white frosting.  You can get the Wilton edible glitter to add a nice finish to the cookies.  These are the place cards.  When you set your table place a cookie in the center of each plate.

Using wide wire ribbon make large bows in red and in purple and attach to the backs  of each chair.  Tape a red rose tied with a purple ribbon (it can be silk) to the underneath of one chair, completely out of sight. The woman who sits in that chair will get the door prize.

burgundy pointsettias

There are a fabulous variety of poinsettias  now and some come in purple! Depending on your budget use these lavishly.  Arranging pots in groups of three worked well for me.  Make bows from red wire edged ribbon to attach to each pot.

I like to use white table cloths because they are so classic, but red or purple are fine too.  Sprinkle glittery confetti over the table cloth before you set the table. It will be a mess to clean up later, but OH! so fun and pretty.

For ambiance play Christmas music. I like to use the classics from the big band era for this type of party because I think it helps set  the mood better. Can it be Christmas without Bing Crosby? I don’t think so!
