History of the Coffee Break
I tried for a couple of minutes hours today to find the history of the coffee break. I mean, after all, it is an important part of the day to most people who work outside the home. For those of us who just schlep around in workout pants and tank tops, hoping it makes us look athletic and thinner, well..honestly? We don’t really care. It is an all day coffee free-for-all here.
Anyway, I really wanted to impart important information today, lest Kettle and Cup get the reputation of being all fluff and stuff. No! Kettle and Cup: An Intellectual Brew…
How’s that?
Anyway…Everything I read conflicted with everything else. Some people say it started in 1901 with some Italian guy…some people say it was in the late 1800s with the wives of the Norwegian immigrants..
Obviously no one really cares knows. Since everyone is sort of tossing around ideas I thought I would toss my coffee into the ring so to speak.
It is my thought that the coffee break started eons ago with…..are you ready for this? God.
Yep. God.
Think about it, people. He spent 6 days working his toga off creating the Heavens and the Earth..then on the 7th day He did what?
That’s right…rested.
So…6/7ths of His time was spent working.. If I remember correctly from back in the dark ages when I was gainfully employed outside the home one worked 8 hour days, minus 1 hour for lunch..
8 hours
1 hour for lunch
___________
7 hour day.
and…we got 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon for our coffee break….which equals one hour, if I am not mistaken.
Therefore, out of 7/7 of a work day…6/7 are spent working and 1/7 is spent on a coffee break.
Personally I don’t think those figures are coincidence. Therefore, I would like to submit to you, my esteemed readers, that the history of the coffee break is long and very honorable.
If it’s good enough for God, it is good enough for me.

I’d love to see how you’d finagle those numbers for the average farmer or any worker prior to the 1900’s
But hey, God did make the coffee beans….so they are good enough for him. He did take a break from creating…..
…so I’ll drink to that.

I see that you are excellent with math! My favorite line, perhaps useful in a header: “An Intellectual Brew”… now that’s good!
