Green Mountain Coffee…Ethiopian Yirgacheffe

by Marye on June 20th, 2008

 green mountain yirgacheffe

The first coffee I brewed when the care package from Green Mountain came in was the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.   The Archer Farms Yirgacheffe I had tried last winter was a big favorite and i was delighted to see another version in the box.

This was a lighter roast than the Archer Farms, the beans were dryer and lighter in color.  The unmistakable aroma of citrus was there though.

The aroma of citrus is more lemon than organge in the Green Mountain coffee.  It is the first thing you smell as you bring the cup to your lips.  The  taste was tart and lemony with a slightly acid aftertaste. Much lighter in body than the Archer Farms.

I liked it but I liked the deep roast of the Archer Farms Yirgacheffe better.  I liked the notes of wine and fig in that were apparent in the darker roast and I don’t like the acidity in the lighter roast.  This is a personal preference, I just do prefer dark roasted coffees.

The Green Mountain was very good.  The lightness of it gave it a sparkly  essence that I found to be unique as I was expecting rich, dark and fruity…I suppose it is a bit like tasting a rose after enjoying a sweet port.

If you like a more acidic coffee, and lighter roast this is perfect.  If you prefer the darker roast then Archer Farms is still the one to try.

    Hi Marye,
I was just wondering if you use a french press when you do your coffee tastings? I read (somewhere) that is how coffee is often tasted because then you can taste it in it’s purest form.
Since our move (away from our beloved organic store with it’s local fair trade coffees), we’ve been drinking the green mountain coffee. Our current favorite is Guatemalan Gold.
My husband gave me a french press travel mug for our anniversary and I’m in love with the french press now! I wish I had a large one for when we have guests!
Thanks for all your coffee reviews. You have excellent taste and if you approve of something, then I know I can trust it!
    Have a great day! :-)

    Thank you Carrie-
I probably should press it but I will tell you why I don’t.
My guess is that most of my readers will not use a press, the vast majority will use a drip coffee maker. When I review a coffee it doesn’t matter what it tastes like in its purest form it matters what it tastes like in its most used form. :) I do press coffee and I love it that way but most people do not go to that trouble.

    Ah ha! Good point! :-)
I don’t know many people that use a french press either. Oh what a luxury it is if one is willing to give just a little bit of extra effort!
